On 28 September 2011, the Center on Global Counterterrorism Cooperation organized a civil society side event on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1373 (2001) and the establishment of the Counter-Terrorism Committee.

The event was held in the Chamber of the UN Economic and Social Council at UN Headquarters in New York on the margins of a special meeting of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee.  It provided an important opportunity to foster a better understanding of the diversity of ways in which civil society can contribute to UN counterterrorism efforts and how the UN and member states can engage with and help empower civil society to advance shared objectives.

Featured speakers included:

The featured speakers' remarks were followed by interventions from the floor from states and other civil society organizations. There was widespread agreement among the participants that governments and inter-governmental bodies, including the UN, cannot succeed in preventing and countering terrorism on their own and should do more to reach out to and engage civil society.  Hope was expressed that the event would lay the groundwork for more regular interaction in the future.
